Doesn't matter what remote you use. You need the Flirc to interpret the commands.

Right, so feel free to test HBO or Starz or Crossy Road, etc and confirm your solution works (spoiler alert: it doesn't)

Guys, I don't think full compatibility with the Shield across every single app will ever be possible.

Problem #1 is there are 3 separate android commands apps can use for "confirmation", but only 1 can be replicated on a PC keyboard.  Google has written guidelines to app developers to support KEYCODE_ENTER at minimum (which is what FLIRC maps to the center button on the remote).  Nvidia tells developers to use KEYCODE_DPAD_CENTER or KEYCODE_BUTTON_A (https://developer.nvidia.com/android-tv-developer-guide) but some apps written for Android TV in general instead of specifically for the Shield don't follow the guidelines and only use KEYCODE_ENTER.  Crossy Road for example uses KEYCODE_BUTTON_A (along with other various gamepad commands), so it won't respond to FLIRC.  HBO uses KEYCODE_DPAD_CENTER for as far as I know.

Problem #2 is that even if all 3 of these those android commands could be replicated by a keyboard, the Flirc can only send one command per button.  I know macros are in the cards at some point, which would help address this specific issue, but as long as problem #1 exists it's largely irrelevant.  It makes sense for the Enter/Return key AKA KEYCODE_ENTER to be the primary button used by Flirc since it's the most widely supported one on Android TV.

@jason I changed the .bin to .fcfc and loaded it to my flirc.  Unfortunately, the OK button still doesn't function as expected in certain apps, and in addition, the directional buttons also stopped working in a few apps.  It does work well within the common apps like Youtube/Netflix though.

That appears to be a .bin file.  The Flirc GUI doesn't seem to let me load it.  Is there another way?

I also tested another keyboard and Enter/Return still acts as KEYCODE_ENTER.  If there's a way to map KEYCODE_ENTER, KEYCODE_DPAD_CENTER and KEYCODE_BUTTON_A all to the Enter/Return key that would be amazing and would solve the problem with some apps not accepting selection inputs!

For the above chart with a keyboard ENTER = OKAY on the remote.

So that is ENTER, not Enter\Return. 

On an Apple keyboard they are marked as two separate things, and ENTER is the correct one. 

This is not true.  At least not using my Logitech keyboard.  Believe me, I've spent like 10+ hours testing this stuff.

You're right that they are marked as separate things though.  Enter/Return = KEYCODE_ENTER whereas Enter = KEYCODE_NUMPAD_ENTER.  Android TV seems to interpret both keycode actions as the same.

I think I've figured pretty much everything important out except for the HID code for the OK Button on the remote.  Did your buddies at nVidia ever give you the HID codes?

This is great work and exactly what. Needed. Thank you. This is still on the map, but at the end of this month. Great job, and when I release my new product in the next two weeks, send me a message, you're getting on the house as a thank you.
I can eventually help that one key, which is return. It could be joystick select or something. If anyone else figures it out, they'll get the same gratitude and thank you gift from me.

Would it also help at all to have the android KeyEvent codes?  I tried pulling those and found that some are the same across all controllers/keyboards (like the arrow keys) and some have different codes (like back/esc for example) even though they achieve the same action.

Hey @jason!

The nVidia Shield TV actually has 2 official control methods.  One is the simple "remote" style you've posted here and the other is a more complex "game controller" style that has many more buttons.  The game controller comes in the box when you buy a shield so it's fully supported by nVidia.

As you've noticed, the remote is super basic and is missing what most people would consider to be standard media functionality like play/pause, rewind, fast forward, etc.  This is why FLIRC is so important to us sheid users, we need to make up for nVidias well-intentioned but flawed minimalist approach!

The biggest thing to me that currently can't be done by FLIRC is volume control.  Both the shield remote and shield controller have volume control on them that I'd love to be able to map to my media remote (I'm using the Xbox One Media Remote).  Also, the directional  buttons setting seem to work for media apps like Kodi and Youtube, but they don't work for some other apps and games.

Would love an update as well.  Remote works great in Kodi, but missing a ton of features in the Leanback launcher and other apps.  Volume Control would be great.
