SkipApp-0.9.996-RC (Cloud Sync, Mobile Support)

SkipApp-0.9.996-RC

This is a fairly large update with over a year of under-the-hood changes. A lot was rewritten as this is now a truly cross-platform application running on Linux, Mac, Windows, Android, and iOS. iOS has limitations due to the inability to communicate with USB devices and is currently still private testing.

Cloud conflict resolution needs improvements. Currently, when a conflict is detected, you need to choose which configuration to keep. We will improve on this later, as well as show a visual difference between the two.

What's to Come

React Native Fabric Support! One of the biggest time wasters is Windows. We are constantly working on problems that Microsoft throws at us, despite React Native Desktop being led by the team at Microsoft. We report bugs, provide feedback, and constantly stay in the loop. Ever since they released React Native Desktop for Windows, they made the poor decision to sandbox the app. This has meant that our app doesn't have ordinary privileges and is sometimes even prevented from communicating with our own remote control due to Logitech or Steam drivers they bundled with Windows. We are constantly updating our 'driver' utility so that the skip app will work with our own remote. What a gigantic waste of time this has been. Furthermore, I've had a dream to be able to configure the FLIRC USB inside this same app, as well as bring new features to that device. But due to this limitation, this was not something I would ever even consider.

Bringing us to about a week ago, Microsoft has finally released a version that includes Fabric with critical bugs fixed that we reported. Not only are we seeing a leap in performance, but this removes the sandbox requirement. We already have a version up and running with hidapi.

Expect 0.9.996 -> 0.9.997 to be the upgrade to Fabric, including bug fixes, visual improvements, and minor details. We are already have something working.

From there, I'd like to build a community portal into the app that shows various remotes that others have learned, as well as bring my decoding library back into the GUI and not rely on external servers anymore. I'll also include some firmware updates to fix some minor grievances. Please feel free to throw in requests.

Dark Mode

We finally added a dark mode which by default will follow your system settings and of course you can turn it always on.

Mobile Support

This version has support for iOS (testflight) and Android. Below is a picture of the app running on Android.

Dynamic Resolutions

With the addition of mobile, we needed to be able to support more than two resolutions. So this version has the ability to be dynamically resized. Not all resolutions are supported, but this will improve over time as we eventually extend down into phone sizes.

Cloud Support

Mobile support didn't make sense without cloud syncing. It was frustrating to set up on your PC, get your tablet, and find that none of your remotes were there, forcing you to start over. So, we needed cloud support before we considered releasing this version. This version supports Google Drive and Dropbox via their API, as well as pointing to a local folder on a cloud provider, making it work with anything that automounts, like iCloud, Microsoft Drive, Syncthing, etc.

New Toggle

No more ambiguity in understanding if a feature is on/off. We changed the way toggle reflects on and off states.

New SVG Remote Design

We struggled with alignment for a long time. It seemed windows / mac / linux had differences that caused a lot of issues. So we converted the remote design into an SVG and our problems are all gone.

Undo Redo

With the addition of cloud, we added undo/redo functionality as demonstrated below.

Test Mode

It was really frustrating to constantly go back into the wizard to test a particular button, or to have to load it onto your remote, sync, and press the button you were testing. Now you can test directly in the GUI and the background flashes red to show that you are not in normal operation. The same toggle to start test mode will stop it, or simply exiting the button panel.

Reminder

Please remember to attach your support file (Even on android), and let us know how testing goes. This bundle includes everything we would ever need to know about your system, your remote setup, your operating system, your cloud status, logs, etc.
