Hello,

I purchased one of the original Flirc Skip 1 Universal Remote Controls directly from you some time ago. When it arrived, I set it aside, and I’ve only recently begun setting it up.

While attempting to map my remotes, the software displays the message: “Programming error.” I have tested this on both Windows 11 and Debian 12.5. My current SkipApp version is 0.9.971.8456-RC.

Could you please advise if there is a newer version I should install, or if there are other steps I can take to resolve this?

Any help would be appricated.

Yes, we are on 0.9.994. You can grab the latest on the downloads section of the product page of the website. Let me know if you have any issues.

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to get my Flirc remote working and could use some guidance. Here’s the story so far:

  • Setup: I’m running Debian 12.5 as my main OS, with a Windows 11 Pro VM (in VirtualBox 7.2) for some tasks. : Windows 11 LTSC, Debian,

  • VirtualBox: Extension Pack installed, USB 3.0 enabled, added my user to vboxusers, restarted VM.

  • USB Devices: My Flirc remote and a USB drive are recognized in Debian,

What we’ve tried:

  1. Enabling USB controller, tried both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0.

  2. Adding USB filters for the Flirc remote in VirtualBox.

  3. Attaching the device while the VM is running.

  4. Verified Extension Pack installation.

  5. Checked Device Manager in Windows — no Flirc device appears.

Background:
I initially tried doing everything from Debian, but Debian/WebTV wanted a lot of extra setup and we got stuck trying to program the remote there. Using Windows LTSC, we were able to program the remote successfully — so I know it works on Windows. Now the goal is to get the Flirc remote fully recognized in the Windows VM so I can continue programming and testing.

Quick Troubleshooting Checklist (already done):

  • VirtualBox Extension Pack installed

  • USB 3.0 (xHCI) enabled in VM settings

  • User added to vboxusers group

  • USB filters added for Flirc remote

  • VM restarted after changes

  • Checked Device Manager in Windows VM

I’m not sure if this is a VirtualBox/VM limitation, a USB passthrough issue, or something specific to the Flirc device. Any advice, tips, or guidance on getting it to work in this setup would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks so much for your help!

Please let me know if you require anything eles to help me trouble shoot

My issue continues without success. I have a fresh install of windows 11 Pro. I am open to all suggestions.

I have installed:

dotnet-sdk-6.0.428-win-x64.exe

Microsoft.DesktopAppInstaller_8wekyb3d8bbwe.msixbundle

Microsoft.UI.Xaml.2.7

Hi BogMan, how are you? My name is Agustin, and I'll try to help you with this.

First of all, we use Human Interface Devices, so you should find the Skip1s under that category in Device Manager.

Next, I understand that the problem is when trying to record. The fact that you are experiencing this error indicates that there is communication with the remote.
If you add a device from our database and try to synchronize, do you get any errors?

Regarding the recording: at that point, several things could be happening. I'd like to review the logs to identify the problem. You can find the logs at C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Packages\SkipApp_nk6j7xazwq5t8\LocalState

Could you share it with me?

Hi Agustin nice to meet you, thank you fo trying to help. Here is the log file that you have requested. FYI = The fact that you are experiencing this error indicates that there is communication with the remote. If you add a device from our database and try to synchronize, do you get any errors. No, none. I look forward to hearing back from you.

Hi Agustin I have posted two logs this time, one for an item listed in the database, and the other is for a LG  LG OLED65E7P     | TV    . I have also post a screen shot of my devicees manager which is not showning the skip remote. Final I wish to add that when I click on the sync button at the bottome of theskipremote app, It does grey out and gives me a check mark.

Thank you for your help so far.

Thanks, BogMan.
We've found the issue and will handle it in future releases.

But to use your remote with the current beta, you need to do the following:

1 - Unplug the remote and close the app.
2 - Remove the batteries.
3 - Press and hold the middle button and return button while plugging in the USB-C (the remote should flash red if any button is pressed).

4 - Launch the software. You'll see the sync button say UPDATE.

Click it, and your remote will receive a new firmware.

After this, your remote should work normally.
If not, or if you have any other issues, I'm still here to help.

Amazing. Thank you so much. I have no idea how you figured this out, but your dedication to service and looking after your customers is truly amazing. I have now successfully programmed the power button, and I will continue. Thank you again!

I see your remote has firmware version 4.12.18; we need a firmware version higher than 4.13. If you followed the steps and we're still here, it's likely the update failed, as it should have been updated to 4.13.11.

Let's try the steps I described to BogMan exactly, and if the error persists, please send me the new logs.

When the app detects the remote, it's in a state that prevents us from updating it. That's why there are some very important details: remove the batteries, keep the app closed while plugging it in and holding down the buttons, release them, and then reopen the app without unplugging it.

Maybe you're missing one of these little details. If not, we can update the firmware from the admin panel. But let's try one more time, and if things continue the same, I'll help you update it from the admin panel.

Let's try updating the firmware from the admin panel.
Use this version of the app: App Link. And download this firmware file: Firmware Link.

Open the app, connect the remote, and go to this section:

Load the firmware I've provided, select it, and click Update Firmware.
This should update the firmware on your remote and resolve the issue. If not, I'll ask you for the new logs again.
