    Vizio Remote (XVT373SV)
Thought I'd just let anyone out there thinking of using Flirc with an HTPC, XBMC and a Vizio Via Apps TV that it works great. My particular model is the XVT373SV (http://www.amazon.com/VIZIO-XVT373SV-37-Inch-Internet-Application/dp/B003GDFJTU). Remote works great with Flirc right out of the box without any additional programming but I did some extra ones for some needed functions. There are only some keys you can program:

    Rewind/Fast Forward
    Stop, Play, Pause
    Up/Down/Left/Right/OK(Enter)
    Menu
    Last

No other buttons respond to Flirc though likely this can be altered or changed by someone with more experience that I

    I am using it thus:

Rewind: Windows Key. With Windows 8, this allows the Metro screen to pop back up, which allows me to use the up/down/left/right to navigate Metro
Fast Forward: Launch XBMC with a programmed Windows shortcut key: Ctrl-Alt-M
Stop/Play/Pause: Works immediately with no programming with WMP, XBMC, and VLC
Up/Down: In addition to navigation in XBMC and Windows without having to program it, when playing a movie, Up/Down will move between chapters. If there are no chapters, 10 minute intervals.
Left/Right: In addition to navigation in XBMC and Windows without having to program it, when playing a movie, Left/Right will go back/forward in 30 second intervals in XBMC.
Menu: Exit XBMC (if on XBMC home screen). When navigating folders/files, it will jump to the bottom for quick access to moving between directories.
Last: Jump to home screen in XBMC.

Thinking of testing the key repeat function in the beta firmware. Tried to load the FW for wake from sleep but it failed the upload and the Flirc app crashed. Had to re-load FW 1.0 to get it working again.

Another odd quirk. If you program the remote to respond on a particular input on your Vizio TV with XBMC, such as HDMI-1, it will not work on any other port. Let's say you move your XBMC to HDMI-2: the remote no longer responds or sends the proper commands. Tried wiping the config on Flirc and re-loading FW but no dice. My guess is that something on the remote has to be reset before it'll push to that other input for XBMC but I just moved it back to the other port as my goal was to make it easy. I can attach my config if anyone needs it or wants it. Otherwise, just here for info for other potential XBMC users who are trying to decide if the Vizio line of TVs is going to work for them. I can state that I am able to access everything I need with one remote with ease.

I use a tiny touchpad/QWERTY keyboard for navigating and using other Windows functions such as Firefox or Handbrake but for movies and such via XBMC, the default remote from Vizio, works flawlessly with Flirc.

    Onkyo remote (RC-810M)
    Hi

I am considering buying a Flirc for my media center but wonder if it will work with my remote. Thought to use the remote controller from my Onkyo TX-NR809 surround receiver.
I have checked the list of supported remote controls, and my remote RC-810M is not mentioned, but the RC-710M are listed.

Do you think it will work? I do not know the difference between the RC-810M and RC-710M, other than the layout is different.

    Freight excessive?
I would happily buy a Flirc unit - except the freight to Australia (for such a small item) is quite excessive - some $17!! It almost doubles the price of the item.

I buy things from the USA all the time (via ebay and other avenues) and understand that freight can be expensive. Surely there is a cheaper option though?

Probably not, I think a few people are having a problem with it.

I'm sure you'll like Flirc and find a use for it

Thanks for the quick response guys. I thought I'd set up my following of this thread so that I would get notified on replies but I haven't received anything so maybe I've done something wrong - I'll take a look at that a little later.

It sounds like anything I can think of will be addressed at some point in the future, and really, I can't imagine I'll be unhappy.

    Thanks guys. Much appreciated.

I would definitely appreciate it, since I just purchased two of these to replace MCE remotes for XBMCbuntu systems that I have been struggling with to get everything working correctly.

    Hey There -

Edit ** I can't believe you beat me to this Chris, I was typing a reply when I saw yours. I'm going to continue with the reply as well just to make sure everything is covered. **

Never hesitate to ask as my questions as possible. It helps everyone that comes to visit. Just let me know if I've missed anything.

Yes, you can definitely face this towards the wall. Mine is in my mac mini, and behind my television, pointed at the wall. It picks up everything without a problem. I even made the case clear because I didn't like the compromise I had to make for the sensitivity when going with any other color. But as Chris pointed out, there are limitations inherent in the 'line of site' model. I don't think you will have any problem.

As Chris pointed out, the wake from sleep will probably work. However, I'm working on a brand new implementation that will probably do the trick. You can follow the forum and as always, you can return flirc should you not be happy.

    Thanks again Chris.

    Welcome to the forums Amadeus,

Yep, new features are being worked on. However Jason has a full-time job as well as this project (of which he is the only one coding for) so progress may appear slower than other larger projects.

    Your Questions:
    1) Waking up your mac from hibernate using Flirc and the beta firmware
At the moment the beta firmware associates a button with the command to wake up the machine. This command cannot be used for another function (only wakes the device). I believe this is planned to be changed so perhaps any button could wake the machine up/the wake button would have another user defined function
Also it is destined to come out of beta when tested and ready.

    2) Will Flirc work facing away from the remote control (i.e. in the back of a computer)
Whilst Flirc does have great reception (largely due to Jason's intentional choice of materials and design), I/R is line of sight so given that you may be sat a fair distance away from the box also, this combination may hinder usability. You could turn your macmini around or buy a small USB extender cable.

3)Is it possible to have a place on the forum/site where users could download configurations created by other users
Users can share profiles in the forum - I would suggest doing this in the "remote controls" section: http://forum.flirc.t...emote-controls/

    4) Sorry for so many questions but I'm based in the UK so postage for the device adds quite a lot to the cost so I want to make sure it do (either now or in the future) what I'm looking for before I buy
No problem. I live in the UK too

    Basic (read: dumb) questions
    Hi there,

I've just come across Flirc (I don't actually remember how now, but that's the Internet for you!). It could be exactly what I'm looking for.

I have a Mac Mini (2011) running XBMC and am using an Apple remote. The Mac will hibernate and cannot be woken other than pressing a key on the keyboard (which I have plugged in for exactly this purpose, tho I'd much rather not have it attached; I use a remote desktop connection from my MBP if I want to do anything on the Mac). I see that there is a beta version of firmware which should allow for this to work but I'm a little confused as to the features in the firmware. I watch films that have subtitles so I need the long-press functionality as well. Is there any firmware with both these features (I don't mind waiting if it's in progress)?

With my Mac Mini, USB devices plug into the back of the device. Will it work or will I need to turn the Mac round so that I can see the Flirc from my sofa (and hence, Apple remote) or will that prevent the normal operations from working if the IR sensor is on the front of the Mac?

The only thing I need Flirc to do for me is to do the wake-up. Will I need to map the whole sequence of keys for XBMC or can I just do something for the waking? Is it possible to have context to the wake - I mean, the only time Flirc needs to do anything is when the device is asleep, once it's awake, the remote has no spare keys that I could assign to the wake sequence.

Is it possible to have a place on the forum/site where users could download configurations created by other users?

Sorry for so many questions but I'm based in the UK so postage for the device adds quite a lot to the cost so I want to make sure it do (either now or in the future) what I'm looking for before I buy.

As an aside, I'm very impressed with what Jason has created. The whole mentality - the enthusiasm, the functionality and responsiveness seems to fit in very well with XBMC. What a giver (that that's aside from the monetary donations to his chosen charity).

    Rgds

The Flirc is going to show up as a generic USB keyboard, so hardware compatibility won't be an issue. That means that once you have a Flirc that's programmed to interpret your remote's buttons, your remote will send keystrokes to your computer (regardless of the platform). But like Chris!, I don't know if the software for programming the device is compatible with Win8. I think the only person who can answer that is probably Jason, unless another user has already tried it and can report their findings here.

Windows 8 build 8250 is out. I think they call it public preview or something like that. I've been using it and love it. I like the much faster boot and so was wondering if this would work. Right now my drivers for the remote doesn't work in Win8, so I thought I'd give this a chance.

I didn't think windows 8 was out yet?
Of course the Flirc module will work once programmed but you may need to use another platform to program it initially.

    Pleasant regards

  19. bruceh added a post in a topic error: no space on device

I've found this exact same sequence. I've recently changed to an old VCR remote to avoid the RC6 issues, and when recording the new button sequences, I found that one or two buttons wouldn't actually be recorded when the GUI said they were (ie keep recording the same key sequence and it will keep saying that it was recorded ok, but if you tell it to erase the key, it says that it was never recorded). Sometimes, trying again a number of times will finally result in an 'already recorded' message, but if it doesn't then you'll eventually get the "device full" message instead. When that happens, all you can do is erase the flirc and re-record.

I've finally got it working as I want it by
    a. recording all the keys I want,
    b. saving the configuration,
    c. finding out which keys didn't work,
    d. erase and reload the config, and try to add the missing keys
    e. repeat from b.

All working now, so I won't touch it again for now. :)

Firmware is latest general release (10-04-1022 I think), GUI is 0.96, recording OS is XP, flirc used on an Ubuntu system.

Yes this is a bit harder than I anticipated, but I am working on it. I believe this is the same thing that might actually be causing the media keys to not work in windows, which is giving twice as much determination to fix this.
